X51 Steam Locomotive New Build Project

John Brougham (Original Concept & Design)

Steam Locomotives have always been a part of my life. Fortunately, I had parents who enjoyed steam excursions and rode behind locomotives that are no longer with us and travelled lines now closed. Steam had been an integral part of my life which has taught me other aspects associated with them, like photography. Initially I was part of the museum at Mile End and later when moved to Port Adelaide (National Rail Museum). Later I became involved with Steamranger where I got my hands dirty on with their engines, eventually qualifying with my boiler ticket. Firing experience was limited so I went to Steamtown Peterborough. Here I was able to learn every aspect of operating a railway preservation society. Whilst I fired loco’s in other locations, I felt the need to put this aside and focus more on family and career.

Wanting to learn more, I studied Mechanical Engineer at TAFE, to better understand their structure and design. I found drafting to be the best way to achieve this. A good friend and fellow engineer, who has a passion for English engines, had written several books about them, suggested I do the same. I was always impressed by American engines. They optimized the look of a steam locomotive: big, bold and powerful. The American influence started early in South Australia so the selection of the X class was a natural one. Over several years I was able to pull together enough information to create a set of drawings to potentially recreate a replica of this engine. This is where the next part of my life continues.
